Whole number, 1 to 100.

The service charge stays on the bill and is excluded from automatic tip bases. An additional tip is calculated independently. Presets are examples, not a tipping requirement.

Examples

Before-tax base

For a 100.00 subtotal, 8.00 tax and 20.00 service charge, an additional 18% tip on the subtotal is 18.00. The final bill is 146.00.

Two kinds of rounding up

A 10.40 subtotal plus 0.50 tax has a 1.56 tip at 15% before tax. Rounding the tip up gives a 2.00 tip and 12.90 total. Rounding the total up gives a 13.00 total and 2.10 tip.

Make the tipping base explicit

Before-tax mode uses the subtotal. After-tax mode uses subtotal plus tax. Neither automatically includes an existing service charge. Custom mode lets you enter a different base, including a base that includes service if that is your intended scenario.

Equal shares without losing pennies

The tool first rounds the additional tip to a cent. Optional round-up then increases that tip. The final total is divided into integer cents: any leftover pennies are assigned one each to the first people in the group. The higher and lower payment counts sum exactly to the bill.

What to know

  • Tax and service are entered amounts rather than rates.
  • The added tip is separate from any service charge or tip already on the bill.

Common questions

Does the service charge reduce the calculated tip?

No. It remains part of the bill, and the entered percentage calculates an additional tip. Set the percentage to zero if you do not want to add one.

Is an after-tax tip required?

The tool does not prescribe a custom or policy. It lets you compare bases using your own choices.

Can I tip on a discounted subtotal?

Yes. Enter the amount you want to represent the subtotal, or use a custom tip base to compare a different amount.

How do I divide an uneven bill?

Use the Split Bill Calculator for personal item subtotals or weighted shares. This tool uses equal payment shares.
