Resulting date2024-02-29

Thursday, February 29, 2024

  1. Combine years and months; add them once: 2024-02-29.
  2. Then add weeks × 7 and days: 2024-02-29.

Month-end clamping can make addition and subtraction asymmetric. No time zone or clock hours are involved.

Calculations run in your browser. Dates and settings are not uploaded by this tool.

How to use the Date Add and Subtract Calculator

  1. 01

Enter a starting date, then choose whether to add or subtract the duration.

  2. 02

Enter whole, nonnegative amounts. Years and months combine into one month shift; weeks and days apply afterward.

  3. 03

Choose the last valid day or an error when a target month is too short. Review the intermediate date and copy the final result.

Examples

January 31 plus one month and one day

Starting January 31, 2024, the month shift first clamps to February 29. Adding the extra day then produces March 1, 2024. With rejection selected, the invalid February 31 target stops the calculation.

Combining years and months matters

February 29, 2024 plus 1 year and 1 month shifts by 13 months at once, producing March 29, 2025. It does not first clamp to February 28 and then move to March 28.

Calendar months have variable lengths

A month duration preserves the starting day number whenever that number exists in the target month. If it does not, clamping uses the last valid date, while rejection asks you to revise the inputs. A month is therefore not converted to a fixed number of days. The intermediate result makes the chosen convention visible before weeks and days are added.

The operation order is part of the answer

The calculator combines years × 12 and months, moves the date once, then applies weeks × 7 and days. Subtraction uses the same order with negative shifts. This is a defined calendar workflow, and another application may use a different sequence. When matching a contract or another system, compare both the endpoint rule and the arithmetic order.

Clamping is not always reversible

January 31 plus one month can become February 28 in a common year. Subtracting one month from that result produces January 28, because the original day number is no longer present. Use rejection if losing the original day number would be an error in your workflow. Whole-day shifts remain independent of daylight-saving clock changes.

What to know

  • Results must remain within Gregorian years 0001–9999. This tool does not infer contractual deadline rules.

Common questions

Can I enter a negative amount?

Choose Subtract duration and enter a nonnegative amount in each field. Mixing positive and negative components is intentionally excluded so the operation order stays clear.

What happens when every amount is zero?

The starting date is returned unchanged. Blank fields are invalid; use the Zero duration action to explicitly set all four components to zero.

Will this tell me a business deadline?

It counts ordinary calendar dates, including weekends. Use the Business Days Calculator for an organization-specific working schedule.
