Square tile in a rectangle
A 12 × 10 ft surface has 120 ft². With 10% waste and actual 12 × 12 in tiles, the target is 132 tiles. Ten tiles per box means 14 boxes containing 140 tiles.
Convert a rectangular, round or ring-shaped surface into individual tiles and full boxes. The face-area method keeps tile sizing, exclusions, waste and box rounding visible.
Estimate tile face area, individual tiles and complete boxes.
For a circle or ring, enter the outside diameter.
Use one currency throughout; tax, labor and delivery excluded.
Prices use your chosen currency consistently. Blank price skips cost. Example coverage, density, yield and prices are editable scenarios, not current product offers.
Illustration is schematic, not an installation drawing.
| Net tile surface | 120 ft² |
|---|---|
| Surface with waste | 132 ft² |
| Whole tiles required | 132 |
| Tiles purchased | 140 |
| Purchased tile face area | 140 ft² |
| Material cost | Not entered |
Method: Net area × (1 + waste/100) ÷ actual tile face area; round tiles up, then round to whole boxes.
No credit is taken for grout joints, so this is a face-area estimate rather than a tile layout. Use actual product dimensions. Diagonal, mosaic, mixed-size and patterned layouts may need a different allowance. Mortar and grout are excluded.
Quantity and material-only cost estimate. Verify field measurements, product instructions and your purchase units. Labor, delivery, taxes, equipment and structural adequacy are excluded.
Calculations run in your browser. This tool does not request a location, retrieve live prices or send your measurements to a material supplier.
Select the surface shape and enter measurements. For circles and rings, the length field is the outside diameter.
Subtract other untiled areas and enter actual tile length and width, plus the tile count in one box.
Choose an allowance for cuts, damage and future repairs. Add a box price if useful, then save the takeoff.

Subtracting a 20 ft² opening from that surface leaves 100 ft². At 10% waste the target is 110 tiles, exactly 11 boxes of ten. This does not imply that all cuts will be reusable.
The calculation divides surface area by actual tile face area. It deliberately gives no credit for grout joints and does not arrange rows, borders or cut tiles. Enter dimensions from the product specification; nominal trade sizes can differ from the face dimensions.
Daltile recommends additional stock for waste and future matching. The percentage here is editable because diagonal layouts, irregular walls, breakage and decorative patterns can change demand. Mosaic sheets, mixed-size patterns, mortar and grout require separate planning.
No. The face-area method ignores grout joint area. This can be conservative on a simple grid, but it cannot replace a detailed cut layout.
Use the Flooring Calculator’s carton-coverage method, or verify the individual tile dimensions and count before using this one.
Purchased face area includes whole-box rounding. Its practical usefulness depends on the cuts, shade batch and pieces you keep.
