Chord Transposer

Move a written chord progression to a new tonic or shift it by a chosen number of semitones. Root notes and slash basses transpose together, while extensions, alterations, spacing, and line breaks remain in place.

For F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db and Gb target tonics, automatic spelling uses flats; other targets use sharps. This is a pitch-class spelling policy, not full harmonic analysis.

Transposed progression

+2 semitones · sharp spelling

Dmaj7 Bm7 | Em7 A7
Gadd9 D/F# | Em7 A7 D

Root and slash-bass notes move together; suffixes such as maj7, m7b5, sus4 and (add9) stay exactly as typed. Separate chords with spaces, newlines or bars. NC and N.C. are supported.

No lyrics, fingering diagrams, Nashville numbers, double accidentals or automatic key detection. C6/9 remains a 6/9 suffix. This tool produces chord text; it does not synthesize chord audio.

Examples

C to D

Cmaj7 Am7 | Dm7 G7 becomes Dmaj7 Bm7 | Em7 A7 when transposed up two semitones.

Slash bass and flat spelling

C/E shifted up one semitone with flat spelling becomes Db/F. The bass moves with the chord root; the slash relationship is retained.

What the transposer preserves

Suffixes such as maj7, m7b5, sus4, add9, dim, aug, and parenthesized alterations remain unchanged. A final slash followed by a note is treated as a bass note. A numeric slash such as C6/9 stays part of the suffix.

Enharmonic spelling policy

Automatic mode prefers flats for F, Bb, Eb, Ab, Db, and Gb target tonics. Other target tonics and raw semitone offsets use sharps. Manual flat or sharp spelling overrides that preference. This pitch-class policy avoids double accidentals but may differ from theoretically exact chord spelling.

Tonic shifts are chromatic

The key selectors compute the ascending difference between tonic pitch classes, modulo 12. They do not infer major or minor quality, reharmonize chords, change voicings, or account for an instrument transposition. Use semitone offsets when you want an explicit downward shift.

What to know

  • Single accidental chord roots and slash basses only; no lyrics, Nashville numbers, or double accidentals.
  • 12,000-character input bound; a pitch-class transposition does not determine voicing or full theoretical spelling.

Common questions

Can I paste a song with lyrics?

Only chord tokens and bar lines are supported. Lyrics, section headings, and chord-over-lyric layouts are rejected so that ordinary text is not silently transformed.

Will minor chords become major?

No. The root moves and the suffix is preserved. Am7 shifted up two semitones becomes Bm7.

Why are some notes spelled differently from my score?

The tool normalizes roots to a single sharp or flat spelling policy. It does not perform key-aware harmonic analysis or preserve theoretical spellings such as E# in an F# major context.

Does it generate audio or guitar fingerings?

No. This tool transposes chord symbols and exports text. It does not synthesize chords or generate fingering diagrams.
